Body Shivers

This poem appears in the August 2002 edition of the George Mason Review.

It’s the first of my poems to be published. It was quite a treat to pick up the journal and see it in print.

shut up
your voice
giggling
strumming
my nerves
revulsion
swells in
my throat
reminding me
of moldy leftovers
SMACK///SLAP
still you rasp
my spine
tingling
in your capable
hands
because
you took
lessons
each night
learning how
to plunk just
RIGHT
PUNCH***JAB
left to right
words pouring
from the side
of your thin
dry lips
pretending
to love and
comfort
not giving
a DAMN
about my cold
shivers
shutupshutup…
my heart
is in my ears
with no veins
to hold my
BLOOD
worms wriggle
leaving oozing
trails of hate
spittle wet
warm upon
my crawling
SKIN
a loaded tank
sits airless
where your love
should lie
grinning
slimy slithering
in my ear
your rancid
BREATH
whistles & spears
thoughts too
blood red
to feel
my hair
crackles
churns
jumping off
my head
to avoid
your teeth
KAMIKAZE
soldiers
going AWOL
this war
too real
to touch
medals
pierce skin
holding on
for dear
DEATH
an inch
of prevention
is worth
a lifetime
of pain
SHUT the fuck UP
