Be the child

Be the child
Who knows from the angle of a shoulder
That he must be as still as air and
As quiet as the moon.

Be the child
Who moves from home to home
Feeling like the ‘other one’ everywhere she goes.
Who keeps a backpack with two changes
of clothes in a closet always at the ready
because she never knows when
she’ll be told to leave.

Be that child.

Be the child
Who has given up trying
To make friends because
Tomorrow she may have to say goodbye.

Be the child
Who winces when someone tries
To touch him with love, afraid.
Who cries at the sound of someone calling him son.

Be that child.

Be the child
Who never trusts.
Whose only certainty is that there
will be more homes, hurt, and pain
and no one to wipe away the tears.

Be the child
Who says, “This begins
And ends with me.”

this is so sad. ../../images/frown.gif
I am amazed by the beauty of that first stanza…it’s haunting.

its a sad poem. its a sad world. but if i did all those things, i dont think i’d live the kind of life i’d like to live. lifes is not worth it if you’re afraid all the time. afraid of the pain that hardships could bring.

“it’s a sad world” yeah, and every minute of every day a child has to try and deal with that fact. I’m spending the week hearing about all the children who are suffering every day and that’s what came out.

i was especially touched by the “this begins and ends with me” line.

beautiful, pea. the world is a better place because you’re in it…

I can’t take credit for that line. In the past three days I’ve heard it from several people and they say it with such purity of intentions, such feeling. It’s amazing to see someone emphatically say, “child abuse begins and ends with me.” I thought and felt this very same thing a few years ago and it’s hard to describe how empowering and liberating such a simple phrase can be.
